How IT Couples Can Balance Their Daily Commutes on OMR When Buying a Flat

Buying a first home is a milestone for any couple. For dual-income households with jobs on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), it also means finding a single flat that works for both partners' commutes. A couple where one partner works in Thoraipakkam and the other in Navalur faces this directly. A home close to one office can leave the other partner with a long drive in both directions every working day.

OMR runs as one long corridor, and the planned metro stations follow the same road, from Kandanchavadi and Perungudi down to Siruseri and SIPCOT. Couples should start their home search with the localities that fall between their two offices on that line.

Place Both Workplaces on the OMR Map First

Before shortlisting any project, buyers should mark both offices on the corridor and note which localities lie between them. The published list of OMR metro stations and status sets out the order clearly. The elevated section (the part of the line built above the road), known as Corridor 3, has roughly 20 stations, running from Nehru Nagar through Kandanchavadi, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Karapakkam, Sholinganallur, Semmancheri, Navalur, and Siruseri to SIPCOT 1 and SIPCOT 2.

For IT couples, a few points on that line help most when plotting both offices:

  • SIPCOT IT Park: Located in Siruseri, on OMR. Employers within 5 minutes of The World of Joy include Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant, Hexaware, and Capgemini.
  • Padur and Kelambakkam: These localities lie south of the SIPCOT terminus (the last station on the line).
  • The Stretch Between Two Offices: For a couple working in Thoraipakkam and Navalur, Karapakkam, Sholinganallur, and Semmancheri sit between the two workplaces.

Measure Peak-Hour Drive Times From Each Shortlisted Locality

Station order tells buyers where a locality sits. Office-hour traffic determines how long each partner spends on the road. Before booking, couples should drive each route at the times both partners actually travel and compare the results side by side.

  • Thoraipakkam to SIPCOT Siruseri: Approximately 13-15 km via OMR, passing through Karapakkam, Sholinganallur, and Navalur. The drive takes around 15-20 minutes in lighter traffic, and couples should allow about 25-40 minutes at peak hours, depending on traffic conditions.
  • Perumbakkam to SIPCOT, Sholinganallur, and Navalur Tech Parks: Approximately 10-11 km to SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri, 6-8 km to the Sholinganallur IT parks in the ELCOT Special Economic Zone, and 5-7 km to the Navalur tech parks.
  • Sholinganallur, Padur, Navalur, and Kelambakkam to SIPCOT Siruseri, Sholinganallur ELCOT, and the Navalur Parks: Approximate distances from each locality to the major OMR IT parks are set out in the table below.
Residential locationSIPCOT SiruseriSholinganallur ELCOTNavalur tech parks
Sholinganallur9-10 km2-4 km5-7 km
Padur2-4 km12-15 km4-6 km
Navalur3-5 km7-9 km1-3 km
Kelambakkam7-8 km13-16 km6-8 km

Among the listed residential locations, Sholinganallur offers the shortest approximate distance to Sholinganallur ELCOT IT Park, making it a convenient choice for IT professionals working in the area. However, actual commute times depend on traffic conditions, road access, and office locations.

Choose the Midpoint Locality When Two Commutes Matter

When One Partner Works North and the Other South

In the station sequence, Sholinganallur sits between Thoraipakkam and Navalur, so neither partner travels the full stretch between the two offices. Sholinganallur is also the planned interchange (a station where two metro lines meet) of Corridor 3 with Corridor 5.

Urbanrise, an established developer in Chennai, offers 3 and 4 BHK apartments at Whispers of Sky in Sholinganallur, about 1 km from OMR and about 1 km from the upcoming metro. The project is registered with the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TNRERA/29/BLG/0389/2025).

When Both Partners Work South

When both offices sit further south, in Navalur or at SIPCOT, Siruseri or Padur may be a suitable choice for the couple. The World of Joy in Siruseri is near SIPCOT IT Park, and Revolution One in Padur offers ready-to-occupy 2 BHK homes with access to Sholinganallur and SIPCOT IT Park. Couples should drive from each site to both offices at peak hours before deciding between the two.

The choice comes down to budget, configuration, and family plans. Buyers looking for a 3 or 4 BHK with room for a home office or a growing family can start in Sholinganallur, while couples planning around a 2 BHK budget can compare Siruseri and Padur.

Plan for the OMR Metro Without Relying on an Opening Date

The OMR elevated section is under construction. No part of Corridor 3 is open to passengers yet, and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has not announced an opening date. Couples should judge each flat on today's road commute and treat the metro as a future addition to it.

A location near proposed stations still helps with long-term planning. The World of Joy in Siruseri is near the planned Siruseri, SIPCOT 1, and SIPCOT 2 stations. For a wider view of the network, buyers can read how Metro Phase 2 connects Urbanrise projects.

Choose a Reliable and Established Builder

Couples who have settled the commute question still need confidence in the developer building the project. Before committing, buyers should check:

  • RERA Registration: The project's registration number, verified on rera.tn.gov.in.
  • Approved Documents: The approved building plan, title documents, and sale agreement.
  • Delivery Record: Homes the developer has already handed over to buyers.

Urbanrise, founded in 2017 as a brand of the Alliance Group and headquartered in Chennai, has 81 million sq.ft of residential development, ₹63,000 crore in cumulative property value from projects sold, planned, and upcoming, and a delivery record of 24,000+ homes.

These Urbanrise projects sit at different points on the corridor, so couples can match a project to where both partners work.

Buying on OMR With Two Commutes in Mind

For IT couples buying on OMR, the decision factors follow a clear order:

  1. Mark both offices on the Corridor 3 station sequence and list the localities between them.
  2. Drive each shortlisted route at peak hours, on the same day and at the same time.
  3. Start the search at the midpoint: Sholinganallur for offices in Thoraipakkam and Navalur, or Siruseri and Padur when both partners work south.
  4. Judge each flat on today's road commute, since the OMR metro is still under construction.
  5. Verify the project's RERA registration on rera.tn.gov.in.

Couples ready to shortlist can visit The World of Joy, Whispers of Sky, and Revolution One, then drive to both offices from each site during office hours before choosing a home.
